THE HOLY SPIRIT CHAPEL

The photograph shows Mgr Philip Moger, Rector of the Basilica and National Shrine, saying a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit for the organisers of the Virtual New Dawn Conference while they were in Walsingham recently to pray for the success of the 2021 Virtual Pilgrimage.

This is the first Mass in the partially restored Holy Spirit Chapel, originally built in 1938, adjacent to the Slipper Chapel here at the Basilica. since the Mosaic was installed and the Chapel was adapted for the burning of pilgrim candles.

The Pentecost Mosaic by Marina Wyner, given by Marist Communities in England, forms the reredos of the new altar, an altar that was placed in the chapel by Mgr John Armitage, the previous Rector. Within the altar is a frame containing the relics of various Saints with a connection to the history of the Christian Faith in England.

The Shrine copy of The Dowry Picture, commemorating the Re-Dedication of England as the Dowry of Mary on 29th March 2020, hangs in the Chapel. You may remember that 700,000 joined in the Re-Dedication.                                                        Tim McDonald

“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” … Acts 2 v1-4

There is still work to be done for the ongoing restoration of the Chapel, where Mass will be able to be celebrated by individual priests or for small groups, and if you would like to be supportive of this venture, donations marked “Holy Spirit Chapel”, will be gratefully received.

The ongoing work includes the creation of a frontal for the altar, new linen to fit the altar and the installation of curtains at the back of the chapel to separate it from the corridor while Masses are celebrated in the Chapel.

The W.A. has pledged to provide the money needed for the materials required for the Holy Ghost Chapel.
